Hulu Theater, Madison Square Garden, New York City - In a super middleweight contest, Edgar Berlanga (20-0, 16 KOs) had to go through some tough moments to win a ten round unanimous decision over Alexis Angulo (27-3, 23 KOs).

The scores were 98-92, 99-91 and 99-91. However, the contest appeared to be closer than the scorecards actually indicated.

Berlanga had to go through some fire during the contest, as he primary boxed to nullify the punching power of Angulo, who never stopped coming forward throughout the fight.

Angulo bloodied the mouth and nose of the unbeaten boxer, but he often allowed Berlanga to move and jab without consequence.

“Mentally, I felt good. I felt happy the whole training camp. I moved the training camp to Puerto Rico, and I can’t be more grateful to be on my island training. I did a full camp for this fight, and you see the difference tonight,” Berlanga said.

“It was fun. I had to stick to the gameplan. Angulo is a tough veteran. He fought for the title two times. He fought [David] Benavidez. He fought [Gilberto] Ramirez. I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy contest.”

There was controversy during the seventh round, when Berlanga tried to bite Angulo on the shoulder during a clinch. It wasn't clear if the referee had actually witnessed the attempt.

After the fight was over, Berlanga openly admitted that he became frustrated and tried to bite Angulo.

“He was throwing elbows. I was about to do a Mike Tyson on him. He kept throwing his elbows, and I didn’t want to get cut,” Berlanga said.

“I just go the experience I needed. My power is still there. I hurt him a couple of times. I didn’t want to fall for any traps or anything. He’s a tough guy.”
