According to Miguel Berchelt, he will defend the super featherweight title of the World Boxing Council on a date in March.
One of the possibilities for that defense is a rematch with Francisco Vargas, who Berchelt stopped to capture the WBC belt in January 2017.
"It's been discussed [that I'll fight at] the end of March. I made my mandatory defense (by knocking out Miguel Román), and the question of all the viewers is why are you going in there with the other champions. This run [in boxing] is short and you have to know how to manage it, but I'll leave that to my promoters Mario Abraham and Fernando Beltrán, who have taken care of me very well," Berchelt said to ESPN Deportes.
What Berchelt would really like is a unification with WBA "regular" world champion Aberto Marchao in a Mexico vs. Puerto Rico war.
"I would love (unify), I think right now the most feasible thing is to fight Machado. The one who paints the most beautiful picture is Machado, a classic Mexico-Puerto Rico battle, there is always great rivalry with the Puerto Ricans," Berchelt said.
Eventually Berchelt will head up to the lightweight limit of 135-pounds - and one of the top dogs in the weight class is WBA champion Vasiliy Lomachenko.
"I do not have problems with making 130 pounds. We all suffer to make the weight, it is hard, but I have no problem. And when I can't make it any longer then I will look at 135 pounds and without a doubt the best one there is Lomachenko and without a doubt I would love a fight with him."
"I have shortcomings, all fighters have them, nobody is perfect inside the ring, you do anything to win, you have a strategy and sometimes you have to risk things. Lomachenko is very good, he is one of the best pound for pound, but he was already beaten by a Mexican - and that was Orlando Salido - and I would love to be the second."
