Light heavyweight contender Liam Cameron, who fights out of Sheffield, has landed the big rematch he wanted, against former Olympian Ben Whittaker.
They will meet on Sunday, April 20, at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, after their initial match, in Saudi Arabia last October, resulted in a technical draw after six rounds when both fighters fell from the ring and Whittaker was unable to continue.
Cameron’s fan club grew exponentially as a result, and he told Sky Sports: “They’ve been great. I’ve had people supporting me and messaging me.”
They will headline the show on Sky Sports and Cameron, aged 34, admitted he was getting used to his new life in the limelight.
“I’ve never had the light before that much on me. It’s a bit too much now,” he joked. “Me and Whittaker have done this. I was supposed to be beat, got moved on and chucked to the side, but I made it, didn’t I?”
Cameron also explained that Whittaker, who is 8-0-1 (5 KOs), will be up against a better version of him.
“I couldn’t have had a worse camp last time,” said Cameron. “I broke my nose three weeks before, we had no sparring. I probably had six, seven weeks’ notice. I’ve had a good 16 weeks training hard. So we will see.”
Cameron said that negotiations had almost resulted in him moving in another direction as recently as a week ago, and he said that he had been offered other fights.
But, reflecting on their first fight in Riyadh, when the going got tough for Whittaker, Cameron added: “I said it was going to be hell for him, and it was.”
