According to multiple reports, Alex 'El Pollo' De Jesus was shot multiple times and killed in the early hours of Sunday on Belmonte Street in the neighborhood of San Jose in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. The boxer lived in the area and police are asking for any information on the crime.
De Jesus, 33-years-old, had a brief career with a lot of luster in the beginning but it was interrupted by his issues with the law.
The boxer began his career as a talented amateur, and represented Puerto Rico in a variety of international events, including the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004. Even in these Olympics, he advanced to the second round.
Before the Olympics, he had also seen action and won a silver medal in the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador in 2002 and then competed in the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo in 2003.
With a look of promise, De Jesus began his professional career in 2005. He won his first 19 fights before suffering his first setback in 2009 against the Argentine Cesar Rene Cuenca, in Buenos Aires, by unanimous decision.
De Jesus recovered from that loss, and in his next bout defeated Jose Angel Roman by unanimous decision in Guaynabo.
However, his career stopped when he was sentenced to prison for four years for domestic abuse.
After serving out his sentence in December 2013, De Jesus tried to resume his boxing career.
In his first fight back, on February 7, 2015, he picked up a unanimous decision win over Javier Garcia in Carolina.
In what turned out to be his final fight, De Jesus was knocked out in six rounds on January 31 in the state of Florida against Joseph Elegele. His career ended with a record of 21-2, with 13 knockouts.
Early in his career, he won seven regional titles: the World Boxing Organization Latino lightweight title, World Boxing Council Caribbean Boxing Federation lightweight title, World Boxing Association Fedecaribe Lightweight title, WBO Latino light welterweight title, WBA Fedecaribe Welterweight title, WBC Latino light welterweight title and the WBA Fedebol light welterweight title.
He was recently facing new problems with the authorities as De Jesus was charged on Saturday night for allegedly attacking his stepmother. She had filed a complaint against him with the local authorities, claiming the boxer attacked her.
A warrant was issued for his arrest. There are some suspicions that someone in the area heard about the crime and took the law into their own hands, shooting the boxer 12 times at around 5:45-6:00 AM as he was walking home.
