Junior featherweight prospect Alan David Picasso outboxed Miguel Mateos Moreno over 10 rounds, winning by unanimous decision Saturday night at the Grand Hotel in Tijuana, Mexico.
Scores were 99-91, 99-91, and 98-92 for Picasso, who improves to 15-0-1 1 NC, 6 knockouts.
Picasso was victorious in his previous fight on February 6, knocking out Jesus Gomez in round 2. The Mexico City resident was facing another prospect in Moreno, who had lost his previous bout to Daniel Lugo on September 25.
Fighting for the first time with former world champion Erik Morales in his corner, Picasso, who resides in Mexico City, was consistent in his attack, fighting well on the inside and working behind a jab from the outside. Picasso dictated the pace of the fight, mostly fighting from the center of the ring.
The 24-year-old Moreno was game, but Picasso stuck to his game-plan of countering with two and three-punch combinations or taking the initiative and landing straight right hands behind a jab to the head.
Moreno, who resides in Guadalajara, Mexico, drops to 11-2, 7 KOs.
In the co-feature, junior welterweight prospect Jose Manuel Garcia of Tijuana battered Cesar Ramos (5-4, 2 KOs) before the fight was stopped in round 6.
After an even start over the first two rounds, Garcia’s (12-0-1, 12 KOs) punches began taking their toll on Ramos. His accurate punches to the head and body diminished Ramos’ punch output as the fight progressed.
Ramos, who resides in Mexico City, began taking a beating in round 6. Garcia increased his attack, connecting with several sharp combinations that stunned Ramos, prompting an immediate stoppage at 2:42 to save Ramos from taking further punishment.
In junior lightweight action, Brayan Zamarripa of nearby Ensenada returned from an almost two-year hiatus to defeat previously-unbeaten Humberto Galindo by split-decision.
One judge scored the bout 59-55 for Galindo, while the other two judges scored the bout 58-56 for the southpaw Zamarripa, who improves to 8-1, 1 KO.
Galindo, another fighter who resides in Tijuana, drops to 13-1-1, 10 KOs.
Fringe junior bantamweight contender Argi Cortes improved to 18-2-2, 8 KOs by stopping Misael Garcia (14-1-2, 10 KOs) of Tijuana at 2:32 of round 7. Cortes, who resides in Mexico City and is trained by Don Nacho Beristain, is now unbeaten in his last 20 bouts after splitting his first four.
Junior featherweight Israel Rodriguez Picazo (21-5, 13 KOs) stopped Hector Garcia Dolores (7-5 1 NC, 5 KOs) in the 10th and final round and junior lightweight Erick Robles (8-1, 6 KOs) of Ensenada knocked out Jose Correa Abarca (3-3, 2 KOs) in the opening round.
The card was promoted by Zanfer Promotions and shown live throughout Mexico on Azteca TV.
